I'd like to step away from the polish for a moment, and explain what my stance and feelings are on Autism; Specifically a certain infamous Autistic Charity. This morning I happened upon a blog post by a woman that goes by "OMum22", wherein she explains in great detail her own stance on the charity in question. I have to say I, for the most part, agree with her. I agree that I do not support the charity itself. I do not agree with Eugenics in Autism. I do not agree that Autism is something that, necessarily, needs to be "fixed". There are many successful members of society that are Autistic, and some have never had any medication or treatment. They have adapted, and thrived. Such is the human way. I also have to accept the bitter side to Autism; That, sometimes, it is not a beautiful disorder. Sometimes it is gritty, and painful, and just too much for any one person, or their family, to handle. So I also have to accept that there may just be some cases for which a treatment or reversal might be appropriate. But even the bitter side has a bitter side. For every good use of a "cure", there will be at least 2 bad uses. Much like sexuality, even IF it's a biological "disorder" that is an anomaly, it is not something just anyone should have the power to wield. It should be up to the person dealing with the disorder or sexuality first-hand. Unfortunately, I know in my heart that would never happen. Those with the power usually desire it; Those that desire it usually do not deserve it; And hose that deserve it usually will never have it. So, accepting the good AND the bad of Autism is necessary. And I cannot in good conscience support a charity that views Autism in all it's bitter beauty as a sickness. However, there is one point I disagree with OMum22 on: I DO support 'Light it up Blue'. Yes, by supporting the event which is LIUB, I bring attention to the charity in question. But, by doing so I also bring attention to Autism. I open the door to a world of research, and beauty, and pain, and tears, and happiness. And that is never a bad thing. By supporting LIUB I may be sending out "bad publicity". But, publicity is publicity, and for the sake of those who do indeed suffer unnecessarily at the hands of Autism, an effective treatment at the very least would be a good commodity. A commodity, and a choice; But the choice would come from legislation AFTER the creation of the commodity. So, for me at least, I support Autism, and all those affected. I support Awareness for Autism. But I do not support Autism Speaks.
